ABOUT BILL KACZOR
Bill Kaczor grew up in Chicago. In high school, he was sports editor and then editor-in-chief of the newspaper. Kaczor holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Eastern Illinois University, where he was a reporter and editor with the campus newspaper and worked at two local dailies, the Mattoon Journal-Gazette and Coles County Daily Times. Bill joined the Air Force during the Vietnam Wa and later earned a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University. Kaczor then returned to the Panhandle to cover city and county government for the Pensacola News Journal. He then joined Gannett News Service in Tallahassee, covering state government. The Associated Press hired Kaczor in 1980 in Tallahassee. He continued state government coverage for AP as well as Florida State University sports. Bill became AP’s Pensacola correspondent in 1984. In Pensacola for 21 years, he was responsible for covering most of the Panhandle. He lives in Gulf Breeze with his wife, Judy, a retired teacher.

ABOUT IN THE LAND OF THE HE-COON
The story begins with Congressman Bob Sikes, known as the He-Coon, who played a crucial role in establishing the Panhandle as a national defense stronghold. His efforts led to the expansion of military bases, including Eglin Air Force Base, and Pensacola Naval Air Station, the birthplace of naval aviation and home to the renowned Blue Angels. 

Beyond military achievements, the Panhandle has witnessed its share of challenges. Yet, it has also made strides in civil rights, law, and environmental advocacy. The legacy of “Saint Bobby” Bowden, who guided Florida State University to national football championships, exemplifies the region's impact on sports. 

The Panhandle has been home to a diverse array of notable figures, including Nobel laureate Paul Dirac, talk show host Joe Scarborough, and sports Hall of Famers like Emmitt Smith and Roy Jones Jr. Their stories are woven into this anthology, offering a rich tapestry of the Panhandle’s history. Through the eyes of journalists, readers will discover the unique spirit and resilience that define this often-overlooked corner of Florida.


ABOUT TOM BAIRD
Tom Baird was a fisheries biologist, marine biology teacher and a college oceanography instructor. He has over sixty publications in the areas of marine science, energy education, and science, technology and society issues and has testified before a congressional subcommittee on national funding for science education. When he wasn’t on the water, he contributed to numerous guides and two textbooks and served on numerous boards for science centers and public aquaria. He is retired from the Florida Dept. of Education, where he was Director and Co-Principal Investigator of a National Science Foundation program and Policy Consultant.
