2019 North FL Regional Community Health Worker (CHW) Symposium | March 29, 2019 10:00 AM
As the opioid crisis intensifies around the country and in the state of Florida, the Florida Community Health Worker Coalition (FCHWC) in partnership with Big Bend AHEC (BBAHEC) and West Florida AHEC (WFAHEC), is ready to aid in combatting the current epidemic of opioid misuse and opioid overdose. Our goal is to raise awareness of substance use disorders (SUDs) in rural and underserved communities. We can accomplish this with both CHW engagement and collaboration with other healthcare professionals through opportunities for continuing education opportunities. CHWs are in a unique position because they are closer to the community than most healthcare professionals. Because of the CHWs relationships within their community, CHWs can be perfect catalysts and change makers to address some of the social determinants of opioid misuse and addiction. Additionally, their embedded place in the community enables them to help their clients navigate the complex SUDs treatment options and help make the path to recovery easier. Other symposium topics include, breast cancer, motivating interviewing and tobacco cessation.
