Before the 2026 general election, political analysts, various polls, and social media sentiment all converged on the prediction that the People's Party would win as the number one party. But the results shattered every expert's pen — because the Bhumjaithai Party won the election, nearly tripling its seats in parliament. Even Bhumjaithai's party leader, Anutin Charnvirakul, admitted the outcome far exceeded expectations. In contrast, parties championing democratic ideals — the People's Party and Pheu Thai — lost a significant number of seats. What does this outcome reflect about Thai society?
After the election, some experts came out to analyze that Bhumjaithai could stay in power for another decade. The party has consolidated forces with multiple elite groups, local godfathers, leveraging various forms of power to secure electoral victory, blocking the People's Party from rising to implement structural reform policies and allowing the established elite to remain in the status quo. How can the democratic camp fight back against this consolidation of the conservative?
Within the People's Party itself, it had risen to become the leading progressive party for two consecutive terms — but what exactly caused this latest sweeping defeat? What does the party believe were the true cause of this defeat? Amid widespread criticism on many fronts, how will the People's Party adapt to compete in the next election? And what tasks must be accomplished within these four years before the next election?
Even learning the hard truth, that does not mean the party can simply walk the path it wants. Amid a global rightward shift, facing those who hold state power, and confronting lawfare directed at the party, every decision about which direction to steer carries repeated dilemmas — for instance: should the party focus on building networks, serving constituents, and coordinating local matters in rural areas as traditional parties have always done, VS continuing to campaign on policy platforms? How should the party position its ideological spectrum — leaning further left by confronting established structures, or shifting somewhat rightward by speaking in practical, technical, and fiscal terms when implementing policy? And through all of this, can the party's most critical mission — building a welfare state — actually be achieved?
Finally, the case of the 44 MPs is moving toward a verdict, which could lead to rulings against party leadership and potentially trigger party dissolution for the third time. How does the party move forward when its most vital resource — key politicians — is being stripped away time and again, and is not a resource that can easily be rebuilt from scratch?
About the Speaker

Suphalak Bumroongkit (Sek) is a researcher/lecturer at the Faculty of Economics, Chiang Mai University, specializing in labor and welfare policy. He is currently conducting a business and human rights (BHR) research project for TTNC Watch, investigating Taiwanese companies operating in Thailand. Previously, he conducted the Indo-Pacific Electronics Supply Chain Worker Rights Research Project for the U.S. Department of Labour. He serves as Secretary General of the Thailand Northern Labor Network, a coalition of workers and civil society organizations focused on labor rights, migrant rights, welfare, and women's issues in the Northern region of Thailand. He also served on various parliamentary committees about labour, welfare, and SMEs issues in the House of Representatives.
In the 2026 national election, Sek ran as a party-list candidate for the People's Party, ranked 66th. Despite the ranking being too high to realistically secure a seat in parliament, Sek chose to run because he wanted to push left-wing issues into Thai society, where the left-wing movement has been absent from the mainstream for a long time. These issues include universal welfare state, labor rights, and social security. He wanted to use the political space to advocate more for left-wing policies and to set the agenda for social debate.

Suphalak Bumroongkit
