Our Chinese-English bilingual group in Taipei meets every two months to discuss short texts in smaller, language-specific groups. This is an age of prophecy.” These are the opening lines from Notes of a Desolate Man. Written in the style of an intimate notebook, the novel follows Xiao Shao, a gay man who, after losing his dear friend Ah Yao to AIDS, confronts a profound sense of emotional exhaustion and existential dislocation. Rich in sensory detail and cultural references, this novel captures the atmosphere of modern urban decadence and hedonism. 朱天文，一九五六年生於高雄鳳山，畢業於淡江大學英文系，十六歲即發表第一篇短篇小說。 一九八二年與侯孝賢結識後，展開長期電影合作，以編劇身分三度榮獲金馬獎；同時，她亦確立了作為臺灣當代重要小說家的地位，於一九九四年以《荒人手記》榮獲第一屆時報文學百萬小說獎首獎。 Born in 1956 in Fengshan, Kaohsiung, Zhu Tianwen graduated from the English Department at Tamkang University. She published her first short story at age sixteen. After meeting Hou Hsiao-hsien in 1982, she began a long collaboration in cinema, winning three Golden Horse Awards for her screenwriting. At the same time, she cemented herself as a major contemporary Taiwanese novelist, marked by her winning the First Prize in the inaugural China Times Million-Dollar Novel Award in 1994 for her novel, Notes of a Desolate Man.
