- **Event Description**: Rose McLarney & Braulio Fonseca will visit City Lights Bookstore on Saturday, April 25th at 3:00pm. Rose will read from her new book of lyric essays, Rubble Masonry, and Braulio from his forthcoming memoir, Falling Forward: (A Lyrical Memoir).

Rubble Masonry is a collection of lyric essays that takes its title from the practice of stone masons who, rather than using materials cut to ideal measurements, work with found rocks’ natural shapes. It combines the rich images and musical language of poetry with prose’s capacity to share personal narratives and information from wide-ranging sources. Diverse content and innovative form distinguish a book that explores the places in which its author, Rose McLarney, finds herself as a woman from the mountain South—in history, national dialogues, public spaces, the natural world, and lineages that extend beyond an individual’s life on earth.

In 2020, as the world stood still and uncertainty reshaped daily life, Braulio Fonseca made a life-altering decision: he left Los Angeles and returned to his roots in the Appalachian Mountains. What followed was more than a change in geography—it was a reckoning with identity, purpose, and the courage to begin again.

Falling Forward: A Lyrical Memoir blends heartfelt poetry with reflective prose to tell the story of struggle, resilience, and transformation. Written in three unfolding acts—two rooted in reflection and one emerging in real time—this debut memoir captures the raw spontaneity of growth as it happens. Each page carries its own distinct energy, mirroring the unpredictability of daily life and the vulnerability of writing toward an unknown future.

A U.S. military veteran, PhD candidate, and teaching assistant at Florida State University, Fonseca brings both academic insight and creative depth to his storytelling. He has been writing since childhood, and in this work, he fully embraces the power of language to heal, question, and inspire.

Falling Forward speaks to anyone who has wrestled with identity, faced unexpected change, or searched for meaning in uncertain times. It is a book for readers who understand what it means to struggle—and to rise again.

All proceeds from this book benefit The Warriors Way Cancer Fund Inc., extending the memoir’s spirit of resilience beyond the page.

Rose McLarney’s collections of poems are Colorfast, Forage, Its Day Being Gone, and The Always Broken Plates of Mountains. She is coeditor of A Literary Field Guide to Southern Appalachia and the Southern Humanities Review.McLarney is Lanier Endowed Professor of Creative Writing at Auburn University.

Braulio Fonseca is a writer and educator, raised in the mountains of Western North Carolina. He is currently a PhD candidate in Creative Writing at Florida State University and serves as Managing Editor of The Southeast Review.
