Sylacauga Parks and Recreation invites community members to learn and enjoy the popular tile-based game of Mahjong through an upcoming Mahjong Lesson Series, followed by ongoing open-play sessions at the J. Craig Smith Community Center.
The Mahjong Lesson Series will be held on March 10, 17, and 24 at 6:00 p.m. and will be taught by instructor Cindy Womack. This three-week series is designed for beginners as well as players looking to strengthen their understanding of the game in a relaxed, welcoming setting. The cost is $30 per person, and we can host up to 8 people in the class.
Mahjong is traditionally played with four players and involves drawing and discarding tiles to create specific winning combinations, such as sets and sequences. The game blends strategy, memory, and luck, making it both mentally stimulating and highly social.
Registration for the lesson series is required in advance and can be completed online at Sylacauga.Recdesk.com or by calling 256-249-8561.
In addition to the lesson series, Sylacauga Parks and Recreation will offer Mahjong Open-Play sessions for those who already know the game or want continued practice:
Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m., beginning March 31
Fridays at 1:00 p.m., beginning April 10
Open-play sessions are free, with no registration required. Participants should bring their Mahjong card and simply show up to play.
This program offers a great opportunity for residents to learn a new game, meet others, and enjoy a fun and engaging activity at the community center.
