'little stabs') is a type of traditional Japanese embroidery or stitching used for the decorative and/or functional reinforcement of cloth and clothing. Owing to the relatively cheap nature of white cotton thread and the abundant nature of cheap, indigo-dyed blue cloth in historical Japan, sashiko has a distinctive appearance of white-on-blue embroidery, though some decorative pieces may also use red thread (source - wikipedia). In this one day class, partcipants will create a table runner, which can also be used as a wall hanging. The class will cover traditional Sashiko stitching techniques, including how to trace patterns by hand, as well as an alternative method using pre-printed designs on water-soluble fabric. The class will also include needle-turn applique techniques. Included: Morning and afternoon tea are provided. Please advise of any dietary concerns! Class Kit - Sashiko base fabric - Antique kimono fabric for appliqué - Tracing paper - Water-soluble fabric with printed pattern - Sashiko thread - Freezer paper When booking you will be asked for your preference in fabric base colour. The choices are black or navy. Class requirements (bring along or purchase at the shop) - Run-out ink ballpoint pen or tracing pen - Masking tape - Clear cellophane (minimum size: 35 cm × 25 cm) - Sashiko needles (available for purchase at the store on the day) - General sewing equipment - Border and backing fabric (to be prepared once the top is completed) - Iron-on Pellon (Vilene) or iron-on interfacing (choice depends on personal preference) The class is capped at 12 students.
