Anzac Memorial
126 Elizabeth Street, Sydney, Australia
This National Day for War Animals, the Anzac Memorial is proud to share a heart-rending piece of live theatre along with a special tour to commemorate the service and sacrifice of animals that have served in war as transport, messengers, and protectors.
This is a rare opportunity for the public to experience a performance of Morris Gleitzman’s powerful monologue, Loyal Creatures, a stirring journey of courage and friendship, of a 16-year-old boy and his horse in the Great War. This poignant piece of historical fiction is based on the experience of the men and horses of the Australian Light Horse. Be swept up in the story of Frank, as he lies about his age and leaves his home in Mudgee behind for the deserts of Egypt and Palestine, with his dad and their horse, Daisy, by his side. In these deserts, Frank stumbles upon the adventure he was seeking, as well as a few things he was not…
This deeply moving tale of loyalty, courage and friendship will be followed by a private after-hours tour of the Memorial, focusing on the vital service of animals throughout our history. From the representation of animals in the art and architecture of the Anzac Memorial building, to stories housed in our Centenary Exhibition, learn of the significant contribution our four-legged friends have made to Australia’s history.
The performance runs for approximately 25 mins and will be followed by the tour.
