- **Event Description**: Join us at the Maritime Museum for the launch of author Ross Gillett's new book Serving the Nation & a new website for locating Naval GravesAbout this EventRenowned Australian naval historian, Ross Gillett’s latest book examines the Royal Australian Navy's activities during the 1950s and 1960s.These were demanding times for the RAN. The Navy was busy with intensive involvement in the Korean War, partnership with other navies to counter the communist insurgents against Malaya, Indonesian Confrontation against Malaysia and the war in Vietnam.Added to these challenges were the introduction and integration of 41 new warships into the Fleet and, on the home front, the never ending ‘political battle’ to secure the funds and personnel needed to perform the assigned tasks. The same years also witnessed the revitalisation of the Fleet Air Arm from its modest beginnings in 1948, through to a sophisticated generation of carrier-based warplanes. Despite this heavy tempo the Navy departed the 1960s in good shape, a major blue water navy in the region.Copies of the books will be available for purchase and be signed by the author.Launch Event: Naval Graves WebsiteThe Naval Historical Society of Australia recently partnered with the Naval Graves Project to host more than twenty years of research on a web based searchable databasewhich provides information on more than 6000 naval men and women who are buried in more than 400 cemeteriesacross Australia. The Project’s objective is to preserve the naval history of Australia by researching, locating, recording and tending the graves of those who served in the RAN and other navies. These graves are located in cemeteries other than the official war cemeteries managed by the Commonwealth. The publicly accessible database provides a wealth of detail not just on the service of these individuals but includes links to additional historic information on the individual or events relating to his or her service. This data base hasalready proved to be a useful tool for genealogist and naval researchers alike. Its value will be demonstrated during this launch event by highlighting the fascinating stories behind many individuals. Come and learn about the depth and breadth of information provided by this fascinating tool.Tickets: $10 .
