Designing a Simulation-Enabled Learning Environment

Designing a Simulation-Enabled Learning Environment

Areas of interest: Simulation, Education, Training, Learning

About the course

This course will enable organisations currently undertaking their training by traditional methods to develop more effective simulation-enabled scenario-based learning. The course will be particularly useful for organisations that have high training overheads or are currently delivering learning that relies on expensive equipment and/or potentially dangerous work environments. At the end of the course participants should be able to:

Understand how to design a simulation-enabled learning environment.

Gain awareness of the unique issues that apply to the design of a simulation-enabled learning environment and how to mitigate them.

Understand the critical criteria which encompass both the effectiveness and restrictions of using simulation technologies when designing and developing learning environments using simulation.

Effectively plan and execute the design of a learning environment using simulation that promotes efficient and effective training outcomes with results consistent with planned goals and outcomes.

Topics covered

Understanding the needs of an effective learning environment

Defining the structure of the learning environment

Development of the required learning content and scenario injects

Developing the training briefing and evaluation requirements

Verification and validation of the learning environment

Who should attend?

Personnel responsible for the development and delivery of learning across academia, industry (including registered training organisations) and government, including:

Education Managers

Learning & Development Managers

Simulation Managers

Training Managers

Presenters

Steven Watt. BSc(Hons) Engineering with Business Studies, Portsmouth University, UK

Steven has spent most of his career working within the training and simulation domain with extensive recent and relevant at the Department of Defence and prior to that working on simulation systems and products within Industry. He has experience of the complete range of uses of modelling and simulation from simplistic desktop constructive simulation exercises; through desktop trainers to full flight simulators providing aircrew training, to large scale combined arms trainers which involve several hundred service personnel engaged in a live, virtual and constructive training environment.

Greg Akhurst MA. Arts (Strategy) University of New England

Greg Akhurst has a proven record of successful leadership and delivery across multiple domains. As an Army Officer, a Senior Associate in Industry and more recently as an Executive Level Public Servant he has developed a unique and seldom seen cross sector level of expertise and experience. Greg is highly skilled at strategic planning, defence capability development, operational management and innovation initiation. He is a respected leader in the Modelling and Simulation community in Australia, particularly in developing programs of commercial opportunity for domestic industry development and the sponsorship of innovation programs

Extend your learning into a postgraduate qualification

Those applying to undertake the Graduate Certificate in Visualisation, Simulation, and Immersive Design, or Master of Visualisation, Simulation, and Immersive Design may claim this non-award course for an equivalence of 3 units of credit as part of their degree through the UNSW Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Procedure.
