‘All That Heaven Allows’ Saturday 15th November + Intro

We’re kicking off our BFI Melodrama season with Douglas Sirk’s classic romance, All That Heaven Allows, a quintessential melodrama that’s sure to pull on your heart strings!

Cary Scott, an upper-class widow, finds herself embroiled in scandal as she falls for a much younger, down-to-earth gardener. The affair between the two sparks scrutiny from her peers and children, causing trouble to brew as gossip rises and whispers in the country club grow.

This opulent and dramatically taut film is a marvelous exploration of love and class intersecting, with emotionally powerful performances from Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson as the two torrid lovers who long for their love to be accepted in an unforgiving and callous world.

Expert talk: We’re delighted to also have Professor Kate Newey joining us from the University of Exeter where she teaches Theatre History, to discuss the richly emotional world of melodrama, and its impact on today’s popular dramatic works.
Kate will take you on a journey through the rich, emotional world of melodrama—from its fiery beginnings in the aftermath of the French Revolution to its powerful influence on today’s popular culture. Exploring how this art form celebrates the extraordinary in ordinary lives and continues to shape the stories we love.
