Elysium Gallery presents The Measure of a Metaphor: Lessons from Nihilism, a new exhibition by Dundee-based artist Ross Forbes, at the College Street Gallery.

Forbes, a graduate of the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design’s distinctive Art and Philosophy programme, developed this body of work while maintaining a studio in Dundee between 2017 and 2019. His first solo show took place in his hometown of Dunfermline, Fife, where Fire Station Creative Director and artist Ian Moir described him as “a talented, qualified artist who made an important contribution to the arts community in Scotland.”

In The Measure of a Metaphor: Lessons from Nihilism, Forbes draws on the ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche — the philosopher renowned for his explorations of nihilism, the Übermensch, and the “death of God.” Forbes interprets these themes through the lens of personal experience and everyday life, using abstraction to probe questions of meaning, becoming, and perception.

Reflecting on the exhibition, Forbes says:

“Being reacts to art while, and as well as, creating art — subtly shaping our futures. Through creation and interpretation; through finding our way and being honest about what the way shows us. Making art matter, making art meaningful — making art known. Swimming in the sea. Watching, watching you watching me. Where do we go from here? The content will emerge. It is there but it is nothing. Yet.”

The striking abstract works on display arise directly from these lived processes of inquiry and reflection.
