9to90 Creative Community

The 9to90 Creative Community is a group for those who might not think they are creative. Established in 2018, initially a series of workshops held annually in the winter, which culminates in an open submission exhibition. The invitation to participate is shared extensively around Swansea and South Wales, including colleges, schools & community groups, resulting a minimum of 250 entries a year. Renowned for its PAINT A PORTRAIT competition, where we invite Welsh celebrities to be immortalised and judge the entries. Over the years Michael Sheen, Rhys Ifans, Rob Brydon, Shirley Bassey, Max Boyce and Catherine Zeta jones have all joined in the generous spirit of the project, sending messages of support to the participants, and Ms Zeta-Jones went on step further and shared her chosen winning entries far and wide, on her instagram.
9to90 expanded into a weekly art project in 2022, meeting at GS Artists, 217 High Street, every Friday 1.30-3.30pm. For its increasing membership it offers; free materials for workshops that move between arts and all kinds of craft, with support from qualified tutors as well as the 9to90 extended family. We have at least two Exhibition opportunities a year and a consistent presence at craft fairs around the Swansea area.
We have an open-door policy with a regular membership, the group is intergenerational in actuality and not just name, and has its own website, and an extensive social media presence. The attendance has more than doubled over the last few years, primarily through word-of-mouth recommendations- the best sort!
Our WhatsApp groups focus on our weekly activities and share information about other free activities across the city. The members are encouraged to use the groups for support or advice. Our demographic has shifted and changed, members come and go, but 9to90 continues to be what we aim for; a safe, kind, supportive, and very inclusive group.
