Embodying the Voice
// The voice is the first musical instrument we know, and singing is the most instinctive way we have to express varying degrees of emotion – from the tiniest thoughts to overwhelming experiences. This workshop is about creating an authentic relationship with your singing voice.
Using physical and vocal techniques from traditional Indian music as well as contemporary forms, the workshop will engage the body and mind to listen deeply, and work as one. Instead of trying to sing songs we’ve adopted from traditional or popular forms of music, the workshop will encourage us to sing musically, without words or lyrics. Through a variety of exercises, games and meditations, we will work on :-
- Developing pitch accuracy through imitation, creating a natural connection between the ears and the vocal cords.
- Opening a playful space to explore sounds we rarely express in everyday life.
- Approaching the voice as a landscape — somatically sensing where sounds arise and experimenting to discover new textures.
- Playing with soft, sweet, strong, patient, loud, strange, and wild sounds, and connecting to these qualities emotionally and sonically to let intuitive expression move through the body–mind.
- Seeking sounds that hold personal meaning, creating space for contemplation, insight, and deeper self-connection
The purpose of the workshop is to try and break the idea of an ‘ideal’ singing voice, and guide us towards accessing intuitive self-expression. Instead of focusing on what we "should" sound like, we will try and discover what sounds like us. It is a simple ambition driven by simple processes, and one that has the potential to be deeply transformative.
Sound Bath
Unconditioning happens through remembering and not through learning.
The physical body responds to the energy body, the energy body responds to the sound body. This sound bath intends to connect us to that sonic body and memory through somatic listening. Participants lie down and with the support of folk stories from Eastern Himalayas go on a journey of music and vibration with Singing bowls, bowed instruments, throat singing and forgotten sounds of Asia.
From hearing to listening
From thinking to feeling
From the intellect into the unknown.
