Though it was a shock, he came into this world a fighter — tiny but strong. After 8 days of care, he was doing so well that he was transferred to St. Paul’s Hospital at 32 weeks, where he would begin learning to eat and grow. Everything was going smoothly. We finally felt like we could breathe again.But then, at just 27 days old, our world shattered.Emmitt suddenly coded due to NEC (Necrotizing Enterocolitis), a life-threatening condition in premature babies. In that moment, time stopped. The team at St. Paul’s NICU worked rapidly and tirelessly to stabilize him, and thanks to their extraordinary skill, compassion, and quick action, our baby survived the scariest day of our lives.During our time at St. Paul’s, we discovered that this NICU is more than just a medical unit — it’s a family. Every baby there is treated with love, as if they were their own. When we couldn’t always be at Emmitt’s side, we knew he was still being held, talked to, cared for, and loved. That gave us peace during the hardest days.But the care didn’t stop with Emmitt. The NICU staff supported us too — through tears, through fear, through joy and exhaustion. They saw us as part of their family as well.We will always be grateful to the St. Paul’s NICU team. Without them, we wouldn’t have our son. Today, we get to hold him, watch him grow, and dream of the future — all because of their unwavering dedication.Now, we want to give back.We’re raising funds to support the incredible work of the St. Paul’s NICU team — so they can continue to provide life-saving care to babies like Emmitt and support to families like ours from all over the province.
