Theatres are a form of creative expression and they allow a catharsis to take place for both, the actors as well as the spectators. Surat is host to umpteen number of theatres and its theatres are known worldwide for the excellent performances and stories that are executed by the artists. Plays in Surat are a treat to the eye and there is something for all age groups. Back in 1855, Parsee Natak Mandali performed a theatre called Rustam Sohrab, which was the beginning of Gujarati Theatre.
Drama theatres in Surat can be found in abundance. Establishing a name for itself in the country, theatres in Surat are a must visit for everyone. Gandhi Smriti Bhavan, named after Mahatma Gandhi who was born in Surat, is a well-known hub for all drama lovers. It can seat up to 800 people and is located in the heart of the city. The Performing Arts Centre, Surat, is located in the heart of the city and is managed by the Surat Municipal Corporation. Divided into several parts, the most important part here is the Auditorium. Rang Upvan is another theatre in Surat that holds plays in the city. The former open-air theatre has now become a steel structure. It can host as many as 1,400 people. The play has a unique music score of its own. The aim of the play besides entertainment is education, to help the youth understand that they must make the most of the years they have.
