Built in 1885, the pub is named in recognition of the area’s docks and ship building heritage, and Isis being an Egyptian goddess which was used as a symbol for navigation on ships.
The pub was a regular for sailors and ship builders, and with links to smuggling and legends of tunnels beneath the building have lead it to become labelled as Sunderland’s most haunted pub.
The pub also has a legend linking it to serial killer Mary Ann Cotton, who lived and worked very close to this building. Despite her execution taking places several years before it ever opened, there are rumours that the pub was built in an area where she killed 2 of her victims.
