Raising a child with special needs can be deeply meaningful—and profoundly complex. In this live webinar, Nilufar Rakhmanova, the lead presenter will share her lived experience as a parent of two children on very different ends of the autism spectrum : one thriving academically, the other with significant behavioral challenges requiring constant supervision. It should be noted that both children are also diagnosed with ADHD.

Families seeking treatment must manage fragmented health, education, and social services, advocacy needs, and major decisions such as relocating for support, while coping with the children’s challenging behaviors.   At the same time, providers may unintentionally overwhelm parents with multiple recommendations that fail to reflect daily realities.

Supporting parents alongside children is essential for long-term resilience and positive outcomes. By listening to and understanding the family context, the clinical team, including play therapists and educators can create more realistic, sustainable, and effective interventions.

This webinar covers the challenges faced by a parent navigating multiple systems, alongside the roles of a caregiver and a play therapist who supported both the child and the parents.  A combination of directive play therapy strategies and CBT for therapeutic alliance were used for socio emotional learning.
