WEIRD BLOOM/Luca Di Cataldo is a Rome-based psych pop and bubble glam
artist. The project, born in 2015 (formerly Weird Black), has three records to his credit: Hy
Brazil (2016), Blisstonia (2018, distributed at Rough Trade East, Brick Lane) and the
acclaimed Stargate (2024). The project features a quirky use of cartoon saturated guitars,
where Luca’s psych hippie melodies move on a wall of harmonies and pumping early 70s
drum grooves. The band’s international trajectory has been marked by significant
milestones, including multiple appearances at SXSW in Austin. Following the 2017 and
2018 editions—where the song "My Dear Elena Summer’s Vudun" was featured on Robin
Hilton’s NPR SXSW best picks—Weird Bloom returned to the SXSW stage in 2025. This
return was highlighted by a prestigious World Cafe session for NPR, recorded in their
hometown, Rome, as part of the "Sense of Place" series, further cementing the project's
reputation within the global independent scene. Other notable international performances
include Eurosonic 2018 (Groningen, NL) and The Great Escape 2018 (Brighton, UK).
The project has maintained a relentless touring schedule, following the 2019 RIV
European Tour and the 2022 Breakin’ Bones tour with the 2025 "West Glitters" European
tour, a comprehensive journey that spanned across the continent. On the Italian circuit, the
band has performed at festivals such as Rock Your Head, A Night Like This, Home
Festival, Disorder Festival, Busker Festival, Bada Fest, and Duna Jam.
The multifaceted formation put together by Luca now sees Adriano Bartoccini on drums,
Mattia Micalich on bass, Edoardo Elia, David Comanducci, and Lorenzo Masini on
guitars. While the 2024 album Stargate became an immediate underground success—
selling out its first press and reaching a second reprint via Hell Nation—the band is already
looking forward. Their upcoming record, "Wrong Time, Wrong Place," is set to be
released via Wild Honey Records. This new work pushes the boundaries of their
sonic identity, further evolving into a distinctive blend of junk-shop, bubble glam,
and pub music. Other notable releases include a 2019 double digital single with Ikarya
Eiichi via Japan’s Lost Frog and The Flying Pan Club EP with Dizzyride via WWNBB.
