The Photography of Fred Stein«Die Leica brachte mir das Fotografieren bei.« So knapp umreißt Fred Stein (1909 – 1967) seine »Ausbildung« zum Fotografen. Als Jude und Sozialist musste der Jurist Stein seine Heimatstadt Dresden 1933 unter dem Druck der Nazis verlassen. Im Pariser Exil konnte er mit seiner Kamera als Porträtfotograf eine zweite Karriere starten, die er ab 1941 in New York erfolgreich fortsetzte. Zugleich leistete er an beiden Orten einen bedeutenden Beitrag zur modernen »street photography«.
