We are sincerely grateful to Mary Hogue, also from the Pollinator Pathway for graciously stepping in to present in Jean's place.

? Gardening for Life

Mary Hogue serves on the Board of the National Pollinator Pathway and is a certified UConn Master Gardener, Master Composter, and Connecticut Audubon Master Naturalist. She chairs the Fairfield Forestry Committee, where the Fairfield Pollinator Pathway work is carried out. Mary is also a board member of the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters and chairs its Education Fund, working to improve state laws that reduce pesticide use and promote responsible stewardship of our public spaces.

In Gardening for Life, Mary explores the many meanings behind the title. Gardening for life means planting native plants and using organic practices that bring life to our gardens. It also means discovering the joy and purpose that gardening brings to our own lives. Most importantly, it reminds us that gardening is a lifelong journey. A garden is never truly finished. It is always growing, changing, and teaching us something new.

Following a brief 15-minute break, we'll welcome our final featured presenter.

? The Use of Herbs Throughout History

Giulia Gambale is the UConn Extension Master Gardener Coordinator for New Haven County, working with more than 100 Master Gardeners and Interns. Her background includes community gardening, wellness gardens, historic gardens, nonprofit leadership, and educational outreach throughout Connecticut.

Through the lens of history, Giulia will explore how herbs were used by Indigenous peoples, enslaved and formerly enslaved individuals, and the residents who lived and worked in and around historic homes and communities.

Learn how these remarkable plants served as:

? Medicine and healing remedies
? Culinary herbs and flavorings
? Fragrances and household uses
? Important resources in everyday life

This fascinating presentation connects gardening, history, and culture, offering a deeper understanding of the plants that continue to enrich our lives today.

We are delighted to welcome both Mary and Giulia to the Stratford Historical Society for what promises to be an informative and inspiring afternoon.
