Jean-Baptiste Nemours, saxophoniste et guitariste né à Port-au-Prince en Haïti, a inventé ce genre musical en 1955. C’est en 1953, qu’il fonde son propre orchestre et son style de musique, qui se déroulait au club Calebasses.

Grâce à son guitariste nommé Raymond Gaspard, le terme musical “konpa-dirèk” voit le jour et plus tard, s’est réduit au célèbre nom “Konpa”. Le Konpa venu d’Haïti s’est rapidement installé dans les autres territoires comme la Martinique et la Guadeloupe.
