About the event

Nerd Nite
Nerd Nite is a free monthly event that invites participants to give short, fun, and informative presentations on all kinds of topics while the audience enjoys a drink. Our passionate speakers will share their expertise and ideas on a variety of topics.

❓Pre-Talk Quiz Challenge 🎊
Before the talk begins, we’ll kick things off with a quick and fun quiz! A few participants will be invited on stage to answer a short set of questions for the chance to win a free drink 🍻 Come early, join in, and test your knowledge!

🌊⛵Lost at the sea? How to use the sun and stars to guide you! 🌞

Before GPS satellites and digital charts guided ships across the oceans, sailors relied on the oldest navigation tool of all — the sky. Astronomical navigation is both an art and a science: a blend of precision, patience, and wonder. It connects us to the great explorers who once charted unknown seas, guided only by the same stars that shine above us tonight.

About the presenter : Hi I'm Édouard ! A surveyor by trade, a sailor by heart I love ancient maps and navigation !

👧🏼🧒🏻 Child Gender Criminals and anti-trans legislation 🏳️‍🌈

Anti-trans legislation abounds across the globe right now, and the US in particular is a breeding ground for it. I'm interested in tracking boilerplate language that spreads across the country and deciphering what certain buzzwords mean for gender conformity enforcement. What can this language tell us about who is to be targeted in coming months and years? About who will be doing the enforcing, and where? In this talk, I'll lead you through the research that brought me to these questions, as well as through the process of building the word frequency analysis tool that we can use together to look at the evolving language of American gender policing.

About the presenter : Hi, I'm Bella! I'm interested in trans rights, coding, fiber arts and speculative fiction.

⚛️⚡️How to Accelerate Matter to the Speed of Light (Well, Almost)

Accelerating an object to speeds close to the speed of light seems impossible without blowing up the budget — and even with a huge one, it probably still would be.
Yet, with a few tricks, a touch of rigor and almost no bad faith, it appears we know this might have been achievable for over a century.
How ? The answer lies in exploring the edges of the universe and the secrets of matter.

About the presenter : I’m Bertrand, passionate about physics and history of science, and creator of the temporarily hibernating YouTube channel "J'm'énerve pas, j’explique". (I'm not mad, I'm explaining.)
