Elm has a quiet strength and a long memory. Once common in our landscapes, elm still persists — regenerating, adapting, and teaching us how to endure.
Getting to Know Elm is a gentle, immersive day that combines learning, making, listening and being. Indoors and outdoors, we’ll spend time exploring elm trees with curiosity and care — both practically and reflectively.
During the day we may:
• Learn how to identify Elm and recognise the ways it grows
• Explore how elm regenerates itself and the habitats it supports
• Look at the many historical uses of Elm in tools, buildings and daily life
• Sit with Elm in quiet observation and guided meditation
• Share reflections, stories and conversations with and about these trees
• Draw elm, notice early signs of flowering, and observe seasonal changes
• Craft with elm — perhaps making an Elm mallet, a wand or staff
• Work with Elm bast to create a simple wrist band or binding
There will be times of quiet, opportunities for shared learning, and space for personal, creative exploration. You don’t need any prior knowledge — just a willingness to slow down, notice, and listen.
This is a calm, reflective day, shaped by the group and by the trees themselves.
