Lessons from Bison: A Story of a Small Farm’s Efforts to Restore Native Ecosystems
With the goal of restoring native biodiversity at Native Prairie Bison, a small Story County farm, Jathan, Racheal, and Mirai Chicoine will share lessons learned from managing a bison family herd. With a strong background in public service and deeply held land ethics, Jathan is interested in engaging others in ways that help them see themselves as part of conservation and the larger, interconnected systems in which we all live. Racheal, drawing on her background as an educator, enjoys sharing knowledge about the richness and importance of native ecosystems. Together, the Chicoine family will discuss restoration efforts on their 180-acre central Iowa farm, working alongside bison, a keystone species that continues to influence them for the better. Efforts include protecting remnant prairie, restoring native prairie and oak savanna, returning marginal ground to tallgrass prairie, and restoring oxbows and wetlands, with the intention of leaving the land in better condition for future generations.
Dinner will be served from 5:30-6:15 with the program following.
