Watch Jasmine team up with music/poetry collective Tell It To The Music to converse, argue and compete with a live band of instrumentalists as they crack open the binary with boldness, humour and celebration.For this special show for SOUND Festival, Dancing to Music You Hate is teaming up with Birmingham’s premier poetry and improv jazz event, Tell It To The Music. Tell It has been hosting poets and jazz musicians and fostering improvised collaboration in venues across Birmingham since the pandemic, and has hosted exciting spoken word artists such as Bradley Taylor, Maureen Onwunali and Zakariye. Leo and Vato from Tell It, alongside Jasmine themselves, will be hosting an open mic to begin the show, where members of the audience can sign up to perform alongside improvised music from the Dancing to Music You Hate band.After premiering to standing ovations, Dancing To Music You Hate won Best Spoken Word Show in the Saboteur Awards and its titular track was performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, broadcast on BBC Four. The show embarked upon an Arts Council England-funded UK tour in 2023, selling out multiple venues, including Symphony Hall. In 2025, Dancing To Music You Hate toured to the Philippines for its international premiere, supported by the British Council’s Connections Through Culture grant programme.Joining Jasmine and Leo on the band is jazz pianist and virtuoso Vato Klemera, Irish music specialist Jobe Sullivan, Alternative Dubstep Orchestra’s Dj C@ In The H@, and drummer Noemi La Barbera.The first half of the night includes a musical open mic where poets can perform their poetry with the band.
