Stoke was no longer plagued with industrial pollution by the 1960s and enjoyed a makeover.  This was the decade of slum clearance and redevelopment: new housing estates, new shopping centres, new pubs, new open spaces... and new people! 

Miners from other areas supplied labour to local collieries and faced crucial lifestyle choices – whether to support Stoke or Vale!  But was the progressive city in too big a hurry and what did it lose in the process?  

Mervyn Edwards investigates.
