Who needs this qualification?
This First Aid at Work (FAW) course is suitable for staff wanting to become designated first aiders in their workplace. It allows for essential first aid to be given to someone who is ill or injured at work and equips the first aider to apply first aid to a range of other specific injuries & illnesses.
Why is this training important?
The H&S (First Aid) regulations 1981 place a general duty on employers to provide first aid treatment to employees within the workplace environment. If having assessed first aid needs, an employer decides to appoint first aiders, the first aider must have a valid certificate of competence.
Course content
โข The role and responsibility of a first aider
โข Assessing incidents and conducting a scene survey
โข Unresponsive casualties, recovery position and CPR
โข Safely and effectively use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
โข Seizures
โข Choking
โข External bleeding
โข Shock
โข Burns and scalds
โข Minor injuries including small cuts, bruises, and splinters
โข Injuries to bones, muscles and joints (including chest, head and spine)
โข Eye injuries
โข Poisoning
โข Anaphylaxis
โข Major illnesses including heart attack and stroke
โข Epilepsy
โข Asthma
โข Diabetic emergencies
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, learners will be able to:
โข Understand the role and responsibility of a first aider
โข Assess an incident
โข Manage a casualty who is unresponsive and NOT breathing normally
โข Provide first aid to an unresponsive and breathing normally casualty
โข Manage a casualty who is in seizure
โข Recognise and assist a casualty who is choking
โข Manage a casualty with external bleeding
โข Manage a casualty who is in shock
โข Understand how to manage a casualty with a minor injury
โข Understand how to manage a casualty with minor burns and scalds
โข Identify the signs, symptoms and history of a casualty
โข Administer first aid to a casualty with injuries to bones, muscles and joints
โข Administer first aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries
โข Administer first aid to a casualty with suspected chest injury
โข Administer first aid to a casualty with burns and scalds
โข Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with an eye Injury
โข Administer first aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning
โข Administer first aid to a casualty with anaphylaxis
