The Bad Plus startade som en klassisk pianotrio med bas, trummor och piano, men med en approach som var allt annat än traditionell. Sedan starten 2000 har gruppen hämtat inspiration långt utanför jazzens genremurar och blandat tolkningar av Aphex Twin, Black Sabbath och Nirvana med Ornette Coleman. Albumet These Are the Vistas (2003) utsågs av NPR:s All Songs Considered till en av decenniets 50 viktigaste inspelningar.
