Martin Wickström (b. 1957) has created his own expression on the scene of Swedish contemporary art with unexpected combinations of images and a realism elaborately depicted. For the exhibition 'Paradiso (Out of the Red)', Wickström has used diapositive photo slides from in his childhood home as a narrative of an altering Western society. In his paintings Wickström reflect his childhood with a vivid presence that leads to contemplation.
A recurring theme in Wickström’s paintings are facades from different parts of the world. The places we see are deserted and empty, very much like a film scene, leaving us with an underlying feeling of mystique. Wickström gives us just as much as a clip from a film, one frame, one photo slide, nothing more – instead he lets us use our fantasy and create a story around the motives. The title of the exhibition, 'Paradiso', is a reference to the film title 'Cinema Paradiso', a film with a nostalgic longing that also characterizes Wickström’s paintings.
Wickström was born in Finspång, Sweden in 1957 and is based in Stockholm, Sweden. He studied at the Gerlesborgsskolan, Stockholm, 1977–1981 and graduated from the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm, in 1987. Previous solo exhibitions include 'Europa', 2015 at Lars Bohman Gallery, Stockholm; 'Perfume River', 2014 at Mike Weiss Gallery, New York, and 'Anita and the Sea', 2008 at Skövde, Örebro and Norrtälje Konsthall and at the Eskilstuna Art Museum. Wickström is represented in several public collections including Stockholm’s Moderna Museet, the Gothenburg Museum of Art, Norrköping’s Art Museum and in both Swedish and international private collections.
