About the event

Reinventing Pranayama; Left Right and Centered
If you are interested in the breath, if you teach breath meditations, if you breathe, you must come. You will get so much out of this weekend at Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA. If you are a devotee of Swami Kripalu, come explore his central practice in a new way, like never before.

You'll go home inspired, refreshed and empowered. You'll be able to continue the practice you learn at home everyday online with others.

At Kripalu Ashram in the 1980s and 90s, our mornings followed a clear rhythm: postures first, then a formal pranayama sequence. At the center of that sequence, every single day, was 24 minutes of Left Right Breath (Anuloma Viloma / Nadi Shodhana.)

It is very difficult to sit cross-legged and float one arm in the air for 24 minutes. Sitting cross-legged is a twisting pose in disguise. Do you reverse your legs to balance your twist in the other direction?

Meanwhile, the shoulders and neck have to freeze just to provide support. Even if you switch hands, or use a so-called “pranayama stick,” you’re still layering one asymmetry on top of another. Over time, all of these small imbalances add up—and they inevitably lead to problems.

Pranayama has been needing a makeover for thousands of years. That’s exactly what we’ve been doing for the last six years: asking a simple, practical question—how do we make a longer Left Right breath practice accessible, without pain, strain, or crookedness?

There is a better way.

Why do singers stand when they sing? Because standing gives them easier access to the full power of the breath. The same is true for pranayama.

Stand up. Support both elbows. Use both thumbs under the nose. It works better that way, with the hands in hakini mudra.

An intrepid group has been showing up online every morning for 6 years, quietly proving that a joyful, grateful, daily breath practice doesn’t require suffering, just smart design and a willingness to rethink old assumptions.
