The Location Situated close to the main historic sites in Stirling, the Old Town Jail is considered to be within one of the most paranormally active areas of the city. Opening in 1847, the jail was a replacement for the tollbooth. Prisoners were initially kept apart and attempts were made to prepare them for a better future when released, yet before long the system began to crumble and the jail became overcrowded. Children as young as 6 years old could be imprisoned there until an act of parliament ended this in 1886. In 1888, the jail became the Military Detention Barracks for soldiers found guilty of various offences, until it was closed in 1935 and became used for storage and training. After being abandoned and falling into disrepair, restoration began in 1991 and the building now operates as a visitor attraction and offices. There have been many reports of unexplained activity including the sound of children crying echoing along the corridors, shadow figures, items moving on their own, and the icy touch of unseen hands.
