- **Event Start and End Date**: Thu, 02 Apr, 2026 at 05:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Join us for “From the Ashes: The Central Sands, Wallace Grange, and the Roots of Wildlife Management in Wisconsin,” presented by Dick Thiel at 5 p.m. April 2, 2026, in room 170 of the Trainer Natural Resources building. The program will explore how Wallace Grange and his wife, Hazel, established Sandhill Wildlife Area during the Great Depression and helped shape early wildlife management in Wisconsin. Attendees will learn how these efforts emerged from the ecological challenges that accompanied settlement in the state and led to the development of one of Wisconsin’s most significant conservation sites.

Thiel, a retired educator with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, was the state’s first wolf biologist and served as coordinator of the Sandhill Outdoor Skills Education Center at Sandhill Wildlife Area from 1990 to 2011. His presentation examines Grange’s career and the evolution of wildlife management in Wisconsin.

This event is part of the Voices of Conservation in Wisconsin’s History Spring Seminar Series, hosted by the Wisconsin Center for Wildlife. The series highlights influential figures and ideas that have shaped conservation in Wisconsin and beyond. All events are free and open to the public and live-streamed on CNR's YouTube Channel.
