Lake Ontario Sediment Tracer Study
Home School Opportunity 

Come be a shoreline scientist! Join the Sterling Nature Center on a shoreline adventure to learn about Lake Ontario’s shoreline and discover how waves, wind, and ice can move the sand and stones along the shore!

Part 1 May 6th, 11 AM-1 PM
Customize brightly painted “tracer” rocks, visit the beach, and make predictions about how the painted rocks will move along the shoreline.

Part 2 May 14 2 PM or May 18 1PM, date TBD pending weather conditions, (Optional Event!)
Place the rocks to begin their journey along the shoreline and see how scientists are using smart rocks to track movement along the shore.

Part 3 May 20, 11 AM-1 PM
Track where the colorful rocks have traveled, collect your own data, and see real science in action

This program is made possible by Sterling Nature Center in partnership with NYSDEC, NYSOGS, NY Sea Grant, and Ramboll Engineering.
