How do you know how far you’ve gone or when to turn when you’re in the middle of the woods? Now that you’re comfortable hiking off-trail with a map & compass, it’s time to learn and practice pace count distance estimating and orienteering skills during a fun day trip with some gorgeous views!
We’ll start off by determining each student’s pace count for fixed distances on flat terrain. Once we’re confident with the easier terrain, we’ll see how hiking uphill and downhill affect our pace count until each of us is confident in estimating distance by pace count in any terrain. Learning how to estimate distance traveled even when having to avoid both small and large obstacles in your way will build a strong base for navigating in the absence of navigable features. We’ll then pair these skills with certain orienteering techniques which use features found both on the map and in the field to reduce the difficulty of a route and the amount of time needed to be paced. There is nothing quite like bushwhacking through the woods, detouring around obstacles like blowdowns, impenetrable vegetation, cliffs, and bodies of water, and then popping out only a few feet from your intended destination to build your confidence and enjoy what few get to experience.
Prerequisite: Map & Compass Navigation or Bushwhacking 1
Minimum Age: 12 years old - the minor(s) and a parent/guardian must all be paid registered participants.
