- **Event Description**: Please join Yampatika for a fun evening as we kick off the winter season with a social evening of food, drink, film viewing and a panel discussion about snowfall, the changing nature of the snowpack, and its impact on water supply and winter recreation.

Meet the Panelists:

Dr. Gannet Hallar
Dr. Gannet Hallar is a Professor of Atmospheric Science at the University of Utah and Director of Storm Peak Laboratory in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. She earned her M.S. and Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Colorado, conducting research around the world—from Antarctica to a remote island in the Indian Ocean with NASA Ames. Under her leadership, Storm Peak Laboratory has expanded its research capacity, instrumentation, and field education programs. Dr. Hallar leads the Hallar Aerosol Research Team (HART), advancing understanding of atmospheric processes that influence climate and air quality.

Ben Berend
Born and raised in Steamboat Springs, Ben spent his childhood at Howelsen Hill dreaming of someday competing in the Winter Olympics. He realized that dream by representing the United States in the 2018 Winter Olympics. He is a real estate broker and partner in the Boyd &amp; Berend Group. Ben was elected to the Parks and Recreation Commission in 2021, where he continues to serve. He also volunteers at the Winter Sports Club and leads Olympic Heritage Tours for the local Tread of Pioneers Museum. Outside of work, Ben loves a grand adventure on his bike or skis.

Kate Burchenal
Kate is the Lead Project Manager for Airborne Snow Observatories, Inc. which measures the amount of water stored in snowpack throughout the West for use in water management decision-making. Kate has a background in water resources management with a Masters of Environmental Science &amp; Management from the Bren School at UC Santa Barbara. Kate serves on the board of directors of the Eagle River Water &amp; Sanitation District representing the town of Minturn, where she lives with her husband and dog. She is an avid skier and loves any opportunity to play in the snow.
 
Dan Gilchrist
Dan has spent nearly four decades skiing and recreating in the Steamboat backcountry, with over 35 years focused on avalanche and snow study. He has served with Routt County Search and Rescue and worked extensively with Storm Peak Laboratory, contributing to numerous snow and atmospheric research projects. Dan has also guided and participated in multiple film shoots showcasing the backcountry he knows so well.

Vance Fulton
Vance is an Engineering Technician with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, where he designs irrigation systems, water control structures, and stockwater systems for private landowners and agricultural entities. Since 1990, he has also collected snowpack data for the NRCS Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecasting Program at sites across Grand, Routt, and Rio Blanco counties. In his free time, Vance enjoys cross-country skiing, hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking.
