A Curatorial Reflection on the Works of Ivan Storm Juliussen
By Pia Myrvold

Standing here in Stavanger, surrounded by traces of a maritime past stretching back hundreds of years, the exhibition "Tall Ships" invites us to pause and listen to the wind in the sails. This is not merely an exhibition of paintings; it is a journey 300 years back in time, of sea life, struggle, and hope along the coast of Jæren.

An Artist Outside the System
Ivan Storm Juliussen’s path to the canvas has been unorthodox. Already at the age of fourteen, he displayed a masterful understanding of light and form, yet he consciously chose to reject traditional art academies. To him, these institutions represented a world that had forgotten the classical techniques that defined the Golden Age. Instead of being shaped by modern pedagogy, he turned directly to the masters.
He did not study theory, but life. He drew inspiration from Willem van de Velde the Younger, who documented naval battles and the unpredictability of the sea with near-photographic precision. He was captivated by Ivan Ajvazovskij's romantic ability to paint the soul of the ocean, where light breaks through clouds to create an almost mystical atmosphere. And he learned from J. Benner's skill in capturing the dramatic interplay between sky and water.
The result is an art that does not just look like it belongs to the past, but actually lives within it. Juliussen has preserved the techniques, materials, and feeling of an era when ships were the only bridges between nations, and when the wind died down, entire societies stood still.

Jæren: A Landscape Shaped by Sails
The exhibition places Jæren at its heart. Here, where the sea meets the land with relentless force, sailing ships were more than just means of transport. They were livelihoods, rescue vessels, and war machines. Over 300 years, the ships of Jæren have witnessed everything from the flourishing of trade to the harsh trials of war.
Juliussen’s paintings tell the story of the people behind the masts. We do not just see ships; we see sailors fighting storms, shipyard craftsmen building hulls of oak and pine, and families on the quay waiting for homecoming. It is a narrative of courage, of traditions forged in saltwater and wind, and of a culture that forms the foundation of our regional identity.

The Revival of the Golden Age
It is rare to see a contemporary artist so deliberately choosing to work in the style of the Golden Age. Juliussen’s use of oil paint and his choice of period-correct, handcrafted frames are not nostalgic gimmicks. They are a necessary part of the storytelling. The frame is not just a border; it is a portal. When you look at one of these works, you are looking through a portal back to a time when craftsmanship was an art in itself, and where every brushstroke carried a story.
These paintings challenge us to reflect on what we have missed in our fast-paced, digital world. They remind us of patience, of the danger of sailing un

A Unique Narrative
As curator, I am proud to present Ivan Storm Juliussen. To my knowledge, he is the only artist in Norway who has dedicated his entire career to exploring and interpreting the golden age of sailing ships with this degree of historical accuracy and artistic integrity.
In "Tall Ships", the public has the opportunity to meet history face-to-face. We invite you to see, feel, and understand the people who sailed, those who built, and the traditions that live on in every brushstroke.
Welcome to a journey through time and memory.
