Staten Island Saunter Stretch #1; St. George Ferry station to New Dorp train

We will explore Staten Island’s 57-mile coastline. However, unlike the Shorewalker’s Great Saunter completed in one day, we will complete the Staten Island Saunter in 6 or so intervals. On this first part, we will start at the Staten Island Ferry terminal, walking mostly on Bay Street, until reaching Alice Austen House Park. Before reaching Fort Wadsworth, we will visit a wonderful, small, neighborhood park, called Von Briesen Park. Fort Wadsworth leads to the Boardwalk at South Beach and further beaches, which we will take until reaching Miller Field and New Dorp Lane. After approximately one more mile, we will reach the New Dorp railway station. The Staten Island Railway (SIR) takes us back to the ferry terminal at St. George.
This first section is 9-10 miles on mostly flat terrain.

MEET: At 9:00 AM outside the bathrooms on the 2nd floor of the Staten Island Ferry terminal in lower Manhattan. Please use the bathrooms in the ferry terminal on the Manhattan side. We will take the ferry leaving at 9:30 AM.
In the St. George terminal (on the Staten Island side), we will meet the drivers inside the terminal and across from the door leading to Bus Platform A. There will be a staircase across from Platform A and on the wall is a sign saying National Lighthouse Museum.

For the drivers:
There is street parking around the New Dorp SIR station. You can park in New Dorp and then take the Staten Island Railway to the St. George ferry terminal.
The fare is the same as the subway, and you can use an OMNY card, a credit card, (or whatever you use to get on the subway or bus) when you exit the train at the St. George Ferry terminal.

There is no waitlist for this hike. All Shorewalkers who want to attend can attend. Please let us know when you sign up if you plan to drive.

If you are unable to attend after signing up, please remove your name from the list so we can know how many to expect.

BRING: Water, snack, lunch. Please make sure you have a snack that you can eat while you are walking. Poles are not needed.
Sneakers are okay.

Those ferry riders going back to the Staten Island Ferry from New Dorp can ride the Staten Island Railway (SIR) to St. George but have to pay (OMNY, credit card, or other method) when they are exiting the SIR at the ferry terminal. Using the same method of payment, you can transfer for free to a subway or bus in Manhattan.
