- **Event Description**: A full day hands-on symposium featuring talks and workshops by visiting artists.About this EventWelcome to the Ancient Futures Symposium 2025: Sense Crafting! This symposium invites us to think with traditional craft forms as strategies for navigating our present world.Make it make sense—making sense in a time of senseless violence feels as if swimming upriver. During this year’s Ancient Futures symposium, we gather to make scents to make sense with visiting artists exteeng, HYUNGI, Jess Eng, and Nicolai Dorka, moving with our sensorium as a political strategy in these overwhelming times. Sensation is possible and pleasureable even in times that seem unendurable and that threaten to submerge us. To make sense out of disorder is a craft. Join us to learn together about listening deeply through the body and hands, about the odd transformation of decaying elements that can make shockingly delightful tastes, the unpredictable alchemies of our material world, and how decay and dust can be reconfigured through craft ecologies of care. Please find below a full schedule, artist bios, and description of workshops offered throughout the day. We are excited to bring you a full day of participatory workshop sessions and artist talks on incense-making, scent-crafting with perfume, and fermentation. All materials will be provided and you will bring home handmade incense, a personal perfume, and pickled veggies.Hyungi Park is a Korean American multidisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles and New York. She works as an artist, incense maker, tattooer, and designer. Park also runs Goyo (LA & NY), a multi-use space for tattooing, retail, events, and workshops where she teaches incense making. Hyungi’s work has been featured in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, and Architectural Digest. She has worked with MOCA, Urban Outfitters, Nike, Shopify, Spotify, and was a member of NEW INC in 2024.Jess Eng is a Brooklyn-based food writer whose work has appeared in the Washington Post, the New York Times, Taste, NPR, and more. She primarily writes about Chinese American food and recipes, though she also enjoys covering restaurant openings along the East Coast and penning national stories about cuisine, culture, and community. Originally from San Francisco, California, Jess swapped coasts to study Statistics and Folklore and Mythology at Harvard. After graduating, she traveled to Taiwan’s eastern coast to document local food traditions, which will be published in a booklet titled Taitung Eats: Personal Explorations in Southeastern Taiwan. She's the founder and host of Ferments Live, a podcast, workshop, and storytelling project exploring the vast world of fermented foods. In her spare time, she enjoys curling up with a great novel and discovering live music. Find her everywhere @goudatalks.Nicolai Dorka is a PhD candidate in Bioengineering at Stanford University. Trained in biotechnology at institutions in Germany and Sweden, he combines his scientific expertise with a passion for fragrance creation, exploring how scent interacts with memory, emotion, and human perception. His interest in perfumery began during an interdisciplinary course with artist Anicka Yi, where he studied the intersection of art and science. The interaction inspired him to pursue scent design as a parallel practice to his academic work, blending technical scientific practice with creative experimentation. This event is produced by Arbor Studio and generously sponsored by the Stanford Materials & Culture Research-Creation Workshop through SPICE, the Stanford Asian American Arts Initiative, the Center for East Asian Studies, and Modern Thought and Literature. Agenda?: 10:00 AM - 10:30 AMOpening Tea Ceremony Host: Kelsey Chen?: 10:30 AM - 12:30 PMThe Scent of History: Incense as a Tool Across AsiaHost: Hyungi Park Info: What does it mean to perceive through scent? This lecture and hands-on session explores the historical, sensory, and metaphysical dimensions of incense in Asia, tracing its use from ancient timekeeping and sacred ritual to early perfumery and medicinal practice.
Beginning with incense’s origins in antiquity, the session examines how scent has structured sacred space, marked time, and mediated between the physical and spiritual. Participants will then be guided in crafting their own incense using traditional materials and methods, engaging directly with the art and intention behind this ancient practice.
All materials are provided, including plant materials to make a batch of incense sticks and cones, along with an informational zine detailing the history and techniques of incense making.
Through this exploration, scent becomes more than aroma—it becomes a vessel for memory, ritual, and connection?: 12:30 PM - 01:30 PMLunch & MingleInfo: Please fill out the food allergies or dietary restriction form! ?: 01:30 PM - 03:30 PMPÀO PÀO 泡泡 Fermentation Journeys in Asia WorkshopHost: Jess EngInfo: PÀO PÀO 泡泡 explores one of the world’s oldest fermentation cultures, diving into its history in Sichuan and Taiwan, woven together with personal dispatches from modern artisans. From lacto-fermented peppers to preserved black beans, fermentation offers more than just preservation. It's a practical, flavorful way to reduce food waste, preserve site-specific culinary traditions, and harness the magic of microbes.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will sample a curated selection of lacto-ferments and learn how to incorporate these tangy, crunchy bites into everyday food and drink. Everyone will leave with a mason jar of house-made pickles, which will be started during the session, plus the skills to craft their own jars at home.?: 03:45 PM - 05:15 PMInvisible Traces: From Aromatic Notes to Scent DesignHost: Nicolai Dorka Info: Scent has been an intimate companion to human culture—a silent language of memory, emotion, and identity. Perfumery has evolved as both science and art, blending botany, chemistry, neuroscience and imagination. This workshop invites participants to explore the rich history of scent while engaging in the tactile, transformative practice of crafting their fragrance.
In this introductory session, we delve into the origins of perfumery: the extraction of resins and oils, the development of distillation techniques, and the rise of modern synthetic molecules that expanded the perfumer’s palette. Participants will learn how raw materials—floral absolutes, earthy tinctures, citrus essences, and avant-garde aroma molecules—interact to compose a harmonious scent. We’ll examine the structure of a fragrance (top, heart, and base notes) and discuss the cultural narratives embedded in scent.
