We’ll explore how Japanese cultural and spiritual beliefs, values, and philosophies about nature, beauty, and our human relationship to nature influence Japanese garden design and maintenance practices. By understanding and appreciating aspects of Japanese garden design and practices you may reflect on and gain some new ideas for your own gardening efforts.

The club business meeting begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by refreshments and social time from 7-7:30, and the presentation at 7:30-8:30. We meet in the Saint Anthony Park Lutheran Church Fireside Room; enter off either Luther Place or Como Ave. The church is across the street from Speedy Market.

Visitors are welcome. We will also broadcast the meeting over Zoom. The zoom link will be emailed to members; for non-members, email sapgardenclub@gmail.com at least 12 hours before the meeting.

Bob Downs has been on a quest to understand how the unique character of Japanese gardens are so effective at capturing and holding one’s attention, calming the mind, and seeing beauty in
everyday objects and experiences. 
Bob has been a garden volunteer for fifteen years at the Ordway Japanese Garden at Como Conservatory, learning from John Powell, a nationally-recognized gardener. He volunteered for five years at the Normandale Japanese garden, has
traveled to Japan twice to visit 60 gardens with Robert Ketchell, a noted garden creator in the UK, and given workshops on Japanese Gardens and Well-being for the National Association
of Japanese Gardens and Anderson Japanese Garden in Rockford, Illinois.
