The variety had been steadily growing in popularity among U.S. consumers long before the movie “Sideways” helped propel Pinot Noir into the national spotlight, yet there is no denying the film’s impact on the variety. Following the release of “Sideways” on Oct. 22, 2004, with the central character singing Pinot Noir’s praises, U.S. supermarket sales jumped 18 percent in less than a year. The California regions with the largest Pinot Noir acreage include Sonoma, Monterey and Santa Barbara counties.

1) 2023 Pinot Noir Bailly Hill
WENTE VINEYARDS: Livermore, California
A bright and fruit forward example of cool coastal growing with youthful aromas of Bing cherries and ripe strawberries that are seamlessly combined with a delicate layer of dark soils, sage, and smoked nuts. Supple and silky tannins combined with modest acidity keep the wine in perfect balance from start to lingering finish.

2) 2023 Pinot Noir Mendocino
CASTLE ROCK WINERY: Palos Verdes, California
This Castle Rock Pinot Noir was produced from grapes grown in beautiful Mendocino County, where vineyards were first planted in the early 1860’s. This medium-bodied wine offers delicate aromas of blackberry, caramel, and cedar. The full midpalate is highlighted by ripe strawberry, leading into a long, refined finish.

3) 2023 Pinot Noir Monterey Reserve
POPPY WINE COMPANY: Monterey, California
This is a wonderful expression of Pinot Noir, offering distinctive aromas of raspberries, dried strawberries, backing spices and violets in a lovely coat of mocha and a splash of sweet vanilla resting on the plush, silky finish.  After a gentle pressing the wine is settled and then transferred to small French oak barrels for aging, for at least one year.

4) 2022 Pinot Noir  Misfits & Mavens
MICHAEL DAVID VINEYARDS: Lodi, California
A special release from Lodi’s finest estate (Michael David) Wines to celebrate our differences while coming together, one glass at a time. All natural wines, sustainably grown and harvested in California.  Light ruby in color with lively bursts of cranberry, vanilla and clove.  Medium in body, mouthwatering flavors of red berry and cedar.
