A landmark year is a time of exceptional accomplishments, and St. Joseph had one in 1927 with the completion of projects that enriched the governmental, civic, social, and private character of the town. Harrison Hartley presents an overview of these works and the visionaries who realized them with commentary on their  
relevance today. Among the subjects featured are Civic Center Park, City Hall, Missouri Theater, the Wyeth estate on Frederick Avenue, and amazing characters like Waylande Gregory, the Boller Brothers, and the  Dubinsky/Durwood family. Hartley’s narration is accompanied by photographs past and present and affords a deep look into the importance of local history and culture (with Q&A as time permits). 

Harrison Hartley is a St. Joseph native who has taught Philosophy, English, and Communication in colleges in Missouri and Kansas and worked in journalism (broadcast and print), mental health, and museum operations for many years. A well-known local public speaker, he has a special interest in the history and character of St.Joseph and takes great pleasure in sharing what he knows and in learning more from those who attend his presentations.

This program is presented in cooperation with the Centennial Celebration Series (CCS) in anticipation of the 100th Anniversary of City Hall and the Missouri Theater in 2027 and organized by the CCS Committee of The Friends of the Missouri Theater.
