# Event Details - **Event Name**: Tour the No. 7 Bottle Shop at Cannington Shaw as part of World Heritage Day - **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 18 Apr, 2026 at 10:00 am – Sat, 18 Apr, 2026 at 03:00 pm (+01:00) - **Event Description**: Join us for a guided tour of No7 Bottle Shop - one of the world's first & last standing Victorian regenerative furnacesAbout this EventTo celebrate World Heritage Day 2026, we are once again opening up the amazing No. 7 Bottle Shop to the public between the hours of 10am and 3pm, with the chance to view the furnace floor area and cone.We will also be running two guided tours on the day starting at 10am and 1pm, with both lasting around 1 hour. These tours will provide wider access, including the tunnels.Whilst we are not making a charge to book on the tour, we are asking for donations on the day, as the Bottle Shop receives no official funding and is therefore reliant on any money it can generate.Coffee and tea will be available for a small charge, with the opportunity to purchase Bottle Shop merchandise.MORE ABOUT THE BOTTLE SHOPJohn Shaw, together with brothers, John and Edwin Cannington, built the revolutionary bottle shop in 1886 to Siemens design, making it one of the first in the world to successfully run 24/7. Over the course of its life several innovations were made, including the introduction of Astley semi-automatic glass bottle making machines. In 1918 it ceased to be an active furnace and the tank was removed, which heralded its new role as a company stores. In World War Two it was pressed into service as an air raid shelter, thanks to its cavernous basement. By the late 1970’s it had fallen into ill repair, and after the 1982 demolitions of the greater Sherdley site, No. 7 became the only remaining part of what was once the largest glass bottle production site in the world.Whilst the furnace tank is long gone, much remains. The oval architectural cone, a hangover feature of earlier crucible furnace batch production still towers over the structure. Beneath the building the flue tunnels, which reversed air through the generators, are still intact too, making for a fascinating glimpse into the past.
