“A Christmas Story” (1983)
_______________________
The Electric Film Series closes out the year with the beloved holiday standard that is “A Christmas Story.” This is not only a very funny and altogether warmhearted yuletide gem but it’s also a joyful celebration of the wonderful spirit of youth. At the heart of the movie is sweet–natured Ralphie (beautifully played by Peter Billingsly), a young boy who dreams of the ultimate Christmas gift. In this case, it’s an official Red Ryder, carbine action, two hundred shot range model air rifle! Of course, every time he attempts to plant what he perceives to be a hint to his parents, they act like they have no idea what he’s talking about. And in typical youthful fashion, Ralphie begins to treat the whole situation as if it might be the end of the world because when we’re kids, this stuff tends to hit hard. Based on the memoirs of the iconic humorist, Jean Shepherd (who also narrates the cinematic proceedings), this movie is, quite simply, a nostalgic hit to the soul. Even if you didn’t grow up in the era that this movie takes place (1940’s) and even if you didn’t see the film when it was first released (1983), it’s still overflowing with an irresistible lived-in sensibility. What’s more, it’s all punctuated by scenarios we can all relate to in some way. This is to say nothing of the Christmasy spirit that envelopes the entire experience. Perhaps the strangest aspect of this movie is that almost a decade earlier, its director, Bob Clark, helmed an entirely different kind of Christmas movie in the form of the holiday slasher, “Black Christmas.” Stranger still, Clark also directed the legendary 80s teen sex comedy, “Porky’s.” With “A Christmas Story,” this storyteller shows that he has a real grasp of what makes Shepherd's memoirs so darn special. From one kid daring another kid to stick his tongue to a flagpole in the heart of the winter, to a youngster’s perpetual fear of a department store Santa, to a child covered in so many layers of winter clothes that he can’t even put his arms down, this movie has far too many memorable moments to cover here so we won’t even try. We’ll just close out by saying that FMASU’s very own Adam Mast has such a deep love for this film that he agreed to direct SGMT’s production of the musical this holiday season. That production runs from November 13th to December 20th at The Opera House in St. George, UT. That said, see where all the magic began at this very special screening and be sure to bring the entire family out because it’s a holiday classic that certainly lives up to its reputation.

Per usual, we at The Electric Film Series aren’t just about the movies themselves. We’re also all about film history and context and as such, with each of these screenings we have a very special guest on hand to introduce the title of the evening and to lead a post-screening discussion. Our guest speaker for this very special 2025 Electric Film Series screening of “A Christmas Story” is beloved Utah Tech University film professor, Nate Snow. Mr. Snow has served as a speaker at past screenings and it’s clear that he knows his stuff. He counts this particular film as one of his all-time favorites so you can expect plenty of grand holiday-inspired insight.

Be sure to arrive at our screening a little early and order an optional menu item from Riggatti’s to enjoy during the post-screening discussion or, you can feel free to take the pizza home with you following the movie.

The Electric Film Series is free for the community, but donations are greatly encouraged as every cent raised will go towards covering our 2025 Electric Film Series season. When RSVPing for your FREE Electric Film Series tickets, it will now list a "Name Your Own Price" option. You're welcome to insert $0 so that the tickets are free of charge but again, we hope you'll consider a donation.

Regardless, thank you for your continuous support.
