About the event

Frontline Afghanistan by Hamilton Wende
Frontline Afghanistan

In 2012 Hamilton Wende was part of a National Geographic team in Afghanistan, on a mission deep into the desert, heading into the front lines with a company of US Marines.

“It’s going to be a physical, mental and spiritual odyssey,” the captain said.

They were ambushed at least three times a day by the Taliban as they struggled through some of the toughest terrain in the world.

In this combat he came to experience the deepest fear he has ever known, in a place where there was no way out.

This is a story of taking one step after another, of discovering the courage to go on no matter where you find yourself.

Hamilton Wende is a writer and journalist based in Johannesburg. He is a multi-award winner including Journalist of the Year National Press Club and North West University Print/Online/Investigative/ Features in 2022 and 2023.

In television he has worked for a number of international networks including National Geographic, CNN, BBC, NBC, Al Jazeera English, ZDF, ARD and a number of others. He has covered fifteen different wars in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The countries he has worked in include Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, Rwanda, Congo, Burundi, Sierra Leone, Angola, Sudan, Eritrea, Kuwait, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan.

Journey Into Darkness, a documentary on the genocide in Rwanda he worked on for the BBC with producer David Harrison and correspondent Fergal Keane won the 1994 Royal Television Society’s International Current Affairs Award.
