Ellen uses a variety of techniques, including resistdyeing and digital printing, to translate her drawings into textile prints. Seaweed hasinspired her recent work and is a theme she continues to explore.Artist StatementMy practice begins with close observation. Through hand drawing and collage, I respondto photographs and objects collected when visiting places of interest; a detail from theinterior of a building or a piece of seaweed found washed ashore can become thestarting point for a design. These drawings and collages form the foundation of mywork, whether translated directly or further developed into printed and dyed textiles.During my undergraduate studies at The Glasgow School of Art, I travelled to Kyoto tolearn traditional Japanese resist-dyeing techniques. I was particularly drawn tok at az ome, a process that begins with the hand-cutting of an intricate stencil, used toapply resist paste to fabric before dyeing. I value the slow, methodical nature ofkatazome and continue to practise the technique. The Japanese approach to craft is anongoing influence and source of inspiration for my work. In spring 2024, I receivedfunding from Creative Scotland to return to Japan for tuition from Takayuki Ishii, amaster indigo dyer and craftsperson.In addition to katazome, I produce small batches of silk scarves that are digitally printedand sewn locally. My most recent collection is inspired by drift seaweed gathered alongthe shoreline of the Isle of Mull. I grew up on Mull, and although I have not lived there forover twenty years, my island upbringing remains a strong part of my identity.
