Gorhambury House
Gorhambury, St Albans, United Kingdom
Sir Francis Bacon (1561–1626) is widely celebrated as the "Father of Empiricism" and a pioneer of the scientific method. There is also a suggestion of a deep, esoteric dimension to his interests, linking his work for the "Advancement of Learning" to secret societies and hidden streams of knowledge.
It is believed at Gorhambury he built follies and temples along the confluence of ley lines. The landscape holds traces of these visionary designs, including a temple mound with an extraordinary view, now loved as a place of contemplation.
On the evening of the Summer Solstice, 21st June 2026, we will gather at this mound for a moving meditation honouring the turning of the year and the longstanding human impulse to seek insight in landscapes that retain a deep, enduring resonance. The meditation will be led by Laura and Finlay Hinde from The Yoga Hall, St Albans.
Please arrive at Gorhambury House with outdoor shoes at 6pm. We will walk circa 20 minutes across the fields to the meditation spot in the woods.
