Designed by architect James Fitzsimmons, the house was advertised as the “Regency” model and served as a showcase for the work of Joseph Chapdelaine, president and treasurer of Joseph Chapdelaine, Inc., which proudly advertised itself as a “Builder of Fine Homes.” This home is truly a fine home of and for the builder himself.A Quebec native, Chapdelaine specialized in building ranch houses under the Chapdelaine Construction name and played an important role in the postwar development of East Forest Park, particularly in the neighborhood surrounding Watershops Pond. His four sons eventually joined the family business, making homebuilding a true family enterprise.Chapdelaine used 154 Pondview Drive as both his home and office, giving prospective clients an opportunity to experience firsthand the quality and craftsmanship of his work. The house incorporated distinctive “show-off” features intended to demonstrate what could be achieved in a modern postwar home, including beautifully paneled rooms and a slate roof—premium materials that conveyed craftsmanship, natural beauty, quality, and permanence.The home's architecture reflects the changing ideals of post World War II American life. Its low-slung, single-story ranch form offered casual, family-oriented living, while its generous scale, high-quality materials, and architect-designed details elevated it into an executive ranch.
