In this 4-lecture series, Dr. Shimizu looks how images of Venus and her legacy has shaped ideals of beauty, love, and woman hood across centuries of art.

March 8 - Venus through the Feminist Lens

Historically, Venus represented the ideal woman as beautiful, fertile, and good. This lecture will take a look at feminist artists who, in response, appropriated the figure of Venus - and Botticelii's version of it - to challenge traditional and contemporary cultural standards.
