In 1993, a New York Times article brought a little-known Mycenaean Greek cemetery near Aidonia into the spotlight, setting off a dramatic cultural heritage case involving tomb robbers, smugglers, archaeologists, and the eventual repatriation of the so-called "Aidonia Treasure" to Greece. Twenty years later, renewed looting prompted the creation of the Tombs of Aidonia Preservation, Heritage, and explOration Synergasia (TAPHOS), an archaeological project dedicated to investigating and protecting the Late Bronze Age cemetery. This talk will explore the site's dramatic history, highlight discoveries from a decade of TAPHOS excavations, and share new insights into the lives and deaths of the Mycenaean Greeks.
